The Horton, located in Epsom, Surrey, is a vibrant cultural venue housed in the beautifully renovated Grade II-listed former Horton Chapel. Originally built in 1901 as part of Epsom’s unique cluster of psychiatric hospitals, the chapel served as a sanctuary for worship and music therapy. Following the closure of the hospitals in the 1990s, the building fell into disrepair until it was saved and transformed by the Horton Chapel Arts & Heritage Society. After extensive renovations, it reopened in April 2022 as a not-for-profit arts and heritage centre.
Today, The Horton offers an inspiring space for live music, theatre, dance, comedy, poetry readings, exhibitions, and creative workshops. It also hosts family-friendly events and community activities designed to appeal to a wide range of audiences. Courses and workshops cater to all skill levels, from beginners to professionals, led by expert practitioners. The venue’s café-bar provides a welcoming spot for visitors to unwind.
The Horton’s mission is to enrich the community by fostering creativity and shared cultural experiences. It aims to bring people together through artistic expression, social activities, and an appreciation of local heritage. Its permanent exhibition explores the history of Epsom’s psychiatric hospital cluster, connecting the past with its dynamic present as a hub for creativity and wellbeing.
